Days out in Cornwall: Chapel Porth

Welcome to the first post in out Days out in Cornwall series. This is the first of many posts I’ve been working on which describe my favourite days out in Cornwall. They mostly revolve around the outdoors and/or going to the beach, so if you like either of those you’re in the right place!

Anyway, lets get this show on the road with our most recent outing to Chapel Porth…

Chapel Porth is a tiny little cove just along the coast from Porthtowan where the major attractions include the beach and the national trust cafe. In fact, those are the only two things in the cove at all! But nonetheless, when the sun is out it’s a very popular spot, so if you want to get a parking space you need to get in there early (or arrive at exactly the right moment like we did). The car park is run by the National Trust so is free to members – something I highly recommend you become if you’re in Cornwall for any length of time.

The walk round to Porthtowan is one of my favourites. You’ve got amazing ice cream at one end, a bar at the other and incredible views in between. Everyone’s a winner! Don’t be put off by the somewhat menacing looking ascent out of the cove, its just to get you to the top of the cliff and after that its near enough flat the entire way. The walk is what I like to call an “achievable” walk, meaning you can comfortably get there and back again in a couple of hours.

The Perfect Outing

For the perfect day out at Chapel Porth I’d recommend arriving late afternoon as people are starting to head home (freeing up parking spaces!) and taking a stroll round to Porthtowan for a drink or two in the Blue Bar. After your walk back to Chapel Porth treat yourself to one of the famous hedgehog ice creams* and then set up camp on the beach ready for a BBQ dinner, which you have of course been keeping in cool in an icebag in the car.

* Incase you don’t know, a hedgehog ice cream consists of delicious vanilla ice cream, smothered in clotted cream and the rolled in toasted nuts. They are to die for.
